Why you should learn a language in the Modern Languages and Literatures Department at Cal State Fullerton

1. General Education (GE) classes

• Category 3B, Introduction to the Humanities—all lower-division language courses count!
• Category 3U, Explorations in the Arts or Humanities—many 300-level language classes count (some taught in English, others in the target language)

2. Take a couple of semesters, and learn to communicate at a basic level

• Get from the airport to your hotel, order in restaurants
• Take another 1-2 semesters, and be able to rent a car, or maybe an apartment

3. Add a minor to your degree, and set yourself apart from the herd

• A minor is like a side quest (your major is your primary quest)
• Take 2-4 300-level courses

4. Earn a professional certificate

• Translation: Spanish-English/English-Spanish
• Spanish for Hispanic Media
• Spanish for Health and Human Services
• Teaching English to speakers of other languages

5. Make a language your major, or add one as a second major

• French, Japanese, Spanish
• Good alone, or as half of a double-major
